Weather and climate episodes and the redistribution of sedimentary masses and associated pollutants within a coastal system
Within the context of global change and the proven increase in large scale climate events which cause the movement of significant masses, the aim is to pinpoint the variability of the flow and the concentration of pollutants in the Rhône delta and to do this over the next 20 to 30 years to evaluate the vulnerability of the environment subjected to these climatic conditions.
The EXTREMA project will therefore be able to evaluate:
- The evolution of the frequency of extreme climate events in the coastal zone of the Golfe du Lion based on the historical records of the last century (precipitation, atmospheric dust, rise in water levels, flooding, storms, cascading).
- Quantify event generated flow rates due to extreme climatic episodes compared with normal annual flow rates (liquid flow movement/solid flow movement – artificial radionuclides and associated trace metals).
- Characterize the nature and type of extreme flows through the identification of preferential transfer vectors (suspension/thrust, dispersion/translocation, channels…).
- Establish empirical relationships of forcing/flow in different study zones (large drainage basins/size restricted basins) useful to both extrapolation and predictive approaches.
- Know the intensity of the redistribution of contaminants within different components of the geosphere.
- Identify concentration and focal points and well-compartments.
- Evaluate the duration of imbalances caused by climatic factors (reversibility or irreversibility, threshold phenomena and sudden changes).
- Evaluate coastal environments’ vulnerability to global climate change over the next 20 to 30 years.
