Quantitative Seismic Hazard Assessment
The QSHA project aims to develop and compare different methods for modelling seismic wave propagation in various environments.
In the event of an earthquake seismic waves cause massive destruction. It is therefore important to develop tools to simulate wave propagation in various environments in addition to other more empirical strategies in a more conventional probability approach. Through the ANR QSHA project in the CATELL programme, the development of methods for modelling wave propagation has allowed cross comparisons with different solutions and different methods such as finite difference methods, finite discontinuous and continuous elements, as well as distinct elements and integral equations. The steps required for the validation of modelling tools were thus identified and lessons learned about the estimation of ground motion have led to the proposal to combine deterministic approaches using knowledge of the propagation environment, and empirical approaches based primarily on data observed for individual earthquakes. Applications in the Grenoble area and the Baie des Anges in Nice illustrate the potential of such models as long as the environment is known.
