Improvement of numerical modelling of the generation, spread and amplification of tsunamis
The TSUMOD project objectives are to improve and develop new methods in the field of numerical simulation of tsunamis, in order to increase understanding of the processes of the generation, spread and coastal intensification of tsunamis.
The main work of the project concerns:
- Modelling the seismic source of large transoceanic tsunamis taking into account the rise time of the fracture that may have an influence at least nearby.
- Combining with a dispersive model for estimating the overall uncertainty and the role of various parameters from the model.
- The use of digital simulation to assess the tsunami risk, especially in areas where long periods between reoccurrence do not allow for complete records. Focus on the mechanical processes of the generation of tsunamigenic underwater landslides, and analysis of their respective roles in the context of active areas (Ecuador, Colombia, Cyprus) or other areas where high sediment accumulation can generate tsunamis (Egyptian coastline, Ligurian Sea).
- Studies of sources in subduction zones, events in the context of forearc or back-arc areas (Ecuador, Colombia, and New Hebrides) and old, poorly understood cases (Crete) will be reassessed.
The TSUMOD project brings together a large community of those involved in modelling tsunamis, in collaboration with geophysicists, oceanographers and physicists. The project includes the development and adaptation of digital tools, which are based on experimental approaches and the interpretation of geophysical data on exposed coastlines.
