History

Since forever and on a sustainable basis

The Pôle Mer Méditerranée is writing its history anew in the heart of a territory that forever more has been turned toward the Mediterranean.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region has been firmly rooted on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea since antiquity. In all eras, it has adeptly developed a strong, maritime economy, continuously adapting to the challenges of its respective eras. Closer to us is the Marine & Sub-Marine Network, initiated by Toulon Var Technologies from 2000 onwards and recognized by the Inter-ministerial Committee for Regional Planning and Development (CIADT) in 2004, which has constituted the ferment of the application of the future Pôle. At the initiative of DCNS and the hard core of entrepreneurs and associated laboratories (Thalès, ECA, CNIM, Ifremer, Principia and the University of South Toulon Var), the application dossier, already closely coordinated with that of Brittany, submitted in the beginning of 2005 in response to the invitation to tender of the French National Land-planning Agency (DATAR), lead to its recognition as an internationally-oriented competitivity centre on 12 July 2005.

The management bodies and operational teams were set up during the founding assembly, held in September 2005, which elected its Steering Committee for a duration of three years. Internationally-oriented competitivity centre, the Pôle Mer Méditerranée intends to take up the challenges of the 21st century for sustainable development for the maritime and coastal economy in the Mediterranean.
