The objective of this project is to restore the grasses to the sea beds which have been damaged by development or by pollution. These meadows, partly consisting of phanerogams, only regenerate naturally very slowly. These meadows are actually nursery zones and play an essential role in the food chain. The proposed method aims to plant or replant these grasses with a high success rate. Anti-scour protection mats made up of polypropylene fronds attached to mesh provide support and protection for experimenting with new procedures for improving the rooting of cuttings and seedlings of flowering plants: restoring the underwater ecosystem.
Trial planting of flowering sea grass beds has, to date, been disappointing, partly due to the fragility of the cuttings. The underwater ecosystem restoration system aims to improve this. It is made up of a system of anti-scour protection mats, root stimulation and cultivated cuttings. A seed bank of phanerogams, gathered as part of a Mediterranean collection system means that over a thousand varieties of phanerogams are available.
The proposed method is an original one: the use of anti-scour protection, a large and varied seed bank and root stimulation.
