A large scope of intervention

Marine renewable energy, or MRE, can produce energy from wind, currents, tides, waves, geo-thermal reservoirs and salinity gradient power ... The exploitation of blue energy or production of electricity from marine energy parks will contribute to France’s European commitments to Renewable Energy and offers real prospects for economic development and job creation.

The deep offshore, located below the photic zone and up to abyssal depths, concentrates 80% of mineral resources which are currently virtually untapped, mainly around areas of high seismic and tectonic activities such as ridges. It also contains numerous hydrocarbon resources.

Markets at different stages of maturity

The renewable energy share of total French consumption is forecast to reach 23% by 2020, with 3% for marine energy equal to 6,000 MW. The goal is energy independence for overseas French territories, which will become the technological showcase for France in the field of MRE.

The market for Oil & Gas, or extraction of fossil fuels, is a very mature market with demand greater than production supply. Dominated by large groups, it should still grow by 2050, with growth prospects in double digits.

Finally, the market for offshore mineral resources which interests many countries is still in an exploratory phase. To move to an operational phase will require massive investment that only global players can commit to as well as consideration of the environmental constraints.

Innovation - the driver of economic and technological development

Most MRE technology including first generation French prototypes should be in testing or in service in the next two or three years. The objective is to have 17.2 TWh per year by 2030, mostly from this technology, with 21,000 potential jobs, 11,000 of which will be very quickly required in the offshore wind industry.

Accessing deep offshore resources to almost 4,000 metres involves developing new technology requiring more powerful robots and electrical equipment for deepwater with real technological innovation. There are many challenges and they themselves allow our SMEs to grow as they meet the needs of the French oil services industry which is very powerful in the world.
