The French shipbuilding and nautical industry represents 50,000 direct jobs with an annual turnover of 9 billion Euros.
France exports between 30 to 80% of its productions, totalling almost 4 billion Euros.
Nearly a third of these jobs and this turnover are achieved in the Mediterranean area. The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, supported by its industry which is closely located to major commercial, military or pleasure ports, has a strong identity in ship maintenance, repair and refitting. Occitania has attracted world leaders in the construction of cruise catamarans and the fields of engineering, naval architecture, equipment and ship breaking are also significant.
Despite economic slowdown and the 2008 and 2012 crises thousands of new vessels are still being delivered across the world and the remaining vessels require specialised attention for their upkeep and maintenance.
Along with the developments in these mature markets, new opportunities are emerging and particularly in the field of marine energy farms and coastal transport of goods and people which contribute to a more sustainable multi-functional approach for coastal towns and regions.
The Mediterranean is a global hub and a superb body of water for cruising and yachting which attracts all sorts of vessels and all nationalities: a global market at arms’ reach and an unparalleled showcase for expertise.
Shipowners, driven by the variations in output and demand are changing certain parameters of their business model.
They are honing requirements for simplicity and safety and expect the best returns on their investments.
This demand for performance is driving new technological requirements and challenges. The aim of the Green Ship of the Future programme is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and the environmental impact, costs and maintenance times by 50% within 10 years…
