A wide scope of intervention


Marine Renewables Energies make it possible to produce energy from wind, currents, tides, swell, thermal gradients, salinity... The exploitation of blue energy, or the production of electricity from marine energy parks, will contribute to the respect of French European commitments in terms of renewable energy and offers real prospects for economic development and employment. Deep offshore, located below the photic zone and to abyssal depths, concentrates 80% of marine mineral resources, almost unexploited today, mainly around areas with high seismic and tectonic activity such as ridges. It also contains considerable hydrocarbon resources.

Markets at different stages of maturity


The Multiannual Energy Programming currently being revised for the coming period foresees a significant growth of offshore wind energy, including the first commercial farms for floating wind energy. The Oil & Gas market, or fossil fuel extraction, is a very mature market, with demand exceeding production supply. Dominated by major groups, it should continue to grow by 2050, with double-digit growth prospects.

Finally, the offshore mining resources market, which is of interest to many countries, is still in an exploration phase. Moving to exploitation will require, beyond environmental constraints, huge investments that only the major global players can make.

Innovation, the driving force behind economic and technological development


Research and testing of various Marine Renewables Energy prototypes is continuing with a focus on the most mature markets such as offshore wind energy, including free floating, with the aim of providing the sector with 1GW per year allocated, resulting in 15,000 permanent jobs. The objective by 2030 is to reach 17.2 TWh per year, mainly from these technologies, with 21,000 jobs at stake, including 11,000 deployed rapidly in the offshore fixed-foundation wind turbine domain.

Accessing deep offshore resources up to nearly 4,000 meters implies developing new technologies requiring more efficient robots and electrical equipment in the depths with real technological breakthroughs. There are many challenge and they allow our SMBs to develop by meeting the needs of the French oil and gas industry, which is very powerful across the world.

The Pôle Mer Méditerranée cluster carries out strategic structuring actions specific to the area of the Floating Offshore Wind Turbine and Underwater Robotics (reference and expert databases, market studies, industrial and port infrastructures, etc.).
