The Sea Industrialists sector, which includes the shipbuilding industry, nautical industries and services, renewable marine energies, and offshore, employs around 115,000 people in France and generates an average annual turnover of €30 billion, 60% of which is generated from export. Nearly a third of these jobs and turnover are generated by Mediterranean players. The Sud Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur and Occitanie Pyrénées-Méditerranée regions, with their industrial networks backed by major commercial, military or recreational seaports, have carved out strong maritime identities in the maintenance, repair and refitting of large ships, have attracted world leaders in the construction of ocean-going catamarans, and have encouraged the permanence and establishment of new talent in the fields of engineering, naval architecture, equipment, and ship deconstruction.
Thousands of new ships are delivered worldwide each year and the world fleet (nearly 90,000 units) requires special attention to maintain it in operational conditions.
While these mature markets are still evolving towards safer and less impactful shipping, new opportunities are emerging, particularly for marine energy production farms, or new uses for recreational boating and coastal transport of goods and people, contributing to more sustainable transport multimodality for cities and coastal regions.
The Mediterranean, a global crossroads of shipping, a strategic area of European geopolitics, rich in energy and food resources, and an extraordinary navigation basin for cruising and recreational boating, attracts all fleets and all nationalities, a world market within reach and a showcase of unparalleled know-how.
Shipowners, driven by regulations, changes in traffic flows, and societal demand, are profoundly changing the parameters of their business model. They sharpen the requirements of sobriety, safety, and expect better returns on investment from their units. This demand for performance generates new needs and the overcoming of new technological challenges. Over the past 10 years, with the implementation of the SHIP OF THE FUTURE program, considerable progress has been made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental impact, construction and operating costs, maintenance time... the horizon is now open in the next 10 years towards the zero emission ship and the autonomous ship, in equally efficient yards.
Through its role at the national level, within the R&D Committee of the national Sea Industrialists sector and its role as pilot of the SMARTSHIP roadmap, or the National Alliance for the Industry of the Future (AIF), as well as through its contribution to the organisation of the SRDE2I/OIR Economie de la Mer of the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region and the SRESRI of the Occitanie Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region, the Pôle Mer Méditerranée Cluster ensures an effective link. It supports the operators on the Mediterranean coast both in terms of innovation and the strengthening of their industrial tools.
