This project studies the applicability of bulbous bows on small and medium sized fishing vessels (from 10m to 30m). Several will be tested in a digital tank and an optimization process will be conducted to automatically find the optimum shape for 2 speeds. These R&D studies are being carried out in partnership with K-Epsilon for the hydrodynamics part and with the INRIA research organization (National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control) for the optimization part and with CRIHAN for the computing resources. The Gatto Naval shipyard will manufacture the bulbous bow on a 25 metre test trawler. The BULBE project is mainly targeting a reduction in forward motion resistance in the hulls of Mediterranean fishing vessels, an area that has not been researched so far in the fisheries sector, as criteria for stability and propeller traction have been the predominant targets for increasing fishing capacity.
