With its central platform in raised position, the L-CAT is a modern catamaran that then turns into a flat-bottomed landing vessel by moving its platform to a lowered position, allowing the landing on any beach in the absence of a port infrastructure. It is intended for the landing of troops, vehicles and equipment from amphibious naval craft (PCBs and TCD). 30 metres long and 12 metres wide, it offers a maximum payload capacity of 80 tons at a speed of about 18 knots, speed when empty is 25 knots. In 2009 the General Delegation for Armament (DGA) informed CNIM of the acquisition of 4 Amphibious "Rapid" Landing Craft (EDA-R) based on this concept. There is the possibility of acquiring a total of 8 craft and entrusting the maintenance to CNIM.
