ASLO2009, the annual Aquatic Science Meeting, gathered together in Nice scientists coming from 60 countries to address the problems and future challenges of the oceans.

For its first meeting in France, the international society for Advancing the Science of Limnology and Oceanography organized its annual congress at the Acropolis Conference Centre in Nice this past January. For over five days, nearly 2400 scientists from 60 countries discussed the latest findings from aquatic studies, at the heart of world environmental challenges. The congress chose an innovative form for its sessions by giving the floor to a pair of scientists with different views (complementary or even opposing) for subjects tackled. The organization of this congress was greatly supported in the Provence Alpes Côte d‘Azur Region: Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, Agglomeration Community of Nice Côte d'Azur, General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes Department, Nice Town Council and Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute.
